Casa de Velázquez is both a centre for artistic creation and a centre for research. It is this that gives it a unique place among the five French Schools abroad run by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research: the French School in Athens, the French School in Rome, the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in El Cairo and the French Middle East School. In fact Casa de Velázquez is unusual in that since its foundation in 1928 it has possessed both an artistic section (equivalent to the Villa Medici in Rome) and a scientific section—the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (EHEHI). A public institution serving scientific, cultural and professional purposes, Casa de Velázquez's mission is to carry out creative activities and research relating to the arts, languages, literatures and societies of Spain and Iberian and Ibero-American countries. Its tasks also include assisting in the training of artists, researchers and teachers, while taking part in the development of artistic and scientific exchanges between France and the other countries concerned.
The Artistic Section of Casa de Velázquez is a centre that encourages experimentation, welcomes the most diverse individual expressions without prejudice and helps to promote the works of its members. At the present time the Artistic Section has room for thirteen members, of French or other nationalities, who are selected in Paris. In addition to these, two Spanish scholars are appointed by Valencia City Council and the Provincial Deputation of Zaragoza respectively. These artists work in one of the following disciplines: architecture, plastic arts, photography, film, video art or musical composition. The members are chosen on the basis of a detailed artistic proposal and are expected to participate fully in the artistic activities organised by the Section. They are appointed for one year, renewable for one further year, or exceptionally two. The Section also admits scholarship holders for stays of one to three months and grants scholarships in conjunction with such prestigious institutions as ESTAMPA (International Contemporary Multiple Art Fair) in Madrid. At the EHEHI, Casa de Velàzquez's Scientific Section, pre- or post-doctoral researchers working in Human and Social Sciences (in fields relevant to the geographical areas of interest) are selected for one-year periods, renewable for one further year. Casa de Velázquez also grants short-term scholarships (for artists, researchers and pre- and post-doctoral students).
FACILITIES:
Casa de Velázquez has a main building housing its administrative and technical services, the library and thirty-three rooms given over to scholars, participants in the institution's activities and passing guests. There are also seventeen individual workshops for artists, most of them in the garden area, plus a number of technical rooms (a music studio, engraving workshop, and photographic laboratory). There is a computer room freely available to members, scholars and guests, and a cafeteria.
Casa de Velázquez boasts a richly-stocked library (with over 100,000 volumes and 1,700 periodicals), a publications section (which annually publishes around fifteen books and a journal in two parts) and a major programme of artistic and scientific events which are organised every year in conjunction with other French, Spanish and European institutions. Accommodation: Casa de Velázquez has 33 rooms (including two equipped for people with reduced mobility), all with wi-fi, that can accommodate guests whose activities - artistic or scientific - warrant a stay in Madrid.
