Llorenç del Penedés, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. URL: www.cercca.com ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:
The Center for Research and Creativity Casamarlés (CeRCCa) is a non-profit organisation that aims to work as a residency for artists and curators and as a provider of affordable working and living space. The objective of CeRCCa is to support both studio-based artists, working individually in a more traditional manner, and artists and curators who define their practice in more conceptual terms. They welcome artists who contemplate and develop the idea of working as ethnographers, as researchers in the social realm, and favours site-specific work and activities involving participation and collaboration. CeRCCa values the experience of living and creating in a different context and encourages exchange and collaboration, while emphasising both the experience gained in the practice of art and research and in everyday life. With this objective CeRCCa proposes a residency format where dialogue and interaction become essential. Each year CeRCCa organises three to four AIR Programs that last for approximately two months each. For each residency three to four artists are selected. In order to build a connection between the visiting artists and Llorenç del Penedes, during the first week of the residency CeRCCa organises work presentations by the artists and the organisers of the program. The organisers bridge the gap between the artists, researchers and the different associations of the village, according to the needs of each artist. CeRCCa also arranges cultural visits to regional and national organisations as well as to different artistic production centres in Catalonia. These activities can be accompanied by guided tours and informal meetings with different cultural agents. The residency also promotes participation in workshops, local festivals and events. CeRCCa can organise a public presentation of the work the artists and researchers have developed during their residency. Depending on the circumstances an exhibition can also take place in a gallery or cultural space of the region or in Barcelona. At the end of each residency and with the agreement of the resident artists and researchers, CeRCCa proposes a short video interview with each resident, aiming to document their experience at CeRCCa. LOCATION:
CeRCCa is located in an old house built by the Marles Vinyes family in the 1850s. The house is situated in the middle of Llorenc del Penedes, a village with 2,000 inhabitants, 50km south of Barcelona and 10km from the coast, in a region famous for the production of wine, cava and olive oil called El Penedes. There are three buses a day from Llorenç to Barcelona. The nearest train station is 3km away, with trains every hour from 5am to 10pm. They have an agreement with the local taxi driver, who can bring you to the train station for €6 and to the beach for €7. Nevertheless, public transport can be a bit tricky and trips should be planned in advance. Llorenç del Penedes can be taken as a good example of the ambiguous consequences of globalisation, as it has weathered many changes in recent years, due mainly to industry and property development, as well as immigration. During the last five years the village has seen the development of large private and public infrastructures as well as the construction of new neighbourhoods, sometimes in direct opposition to the interests of the inhabitants. As such it is another incidence of what has been happening around the region and many rural areas across Western Europe. It is in this context that CeRCCa was developed, and it is to this process that CeRCCa tries to react. FACILITIES:
